Fossil hunt at Herne Bay |
Today I visited Herne Bay. The weather conditions were very good although it seemed that a lot of extra sand had covered the lower shore so it was not easy to find very many sharks teeth. Unfortunately I was unable to stay longer to catch the best hunting areas. However a nice example of an Otodus obliqus was found at the baseof the shingle bank close the London Clay exposure. It measures 6 cm along its longest length.

Herne Bay is quite a variable location and you need a low tide of below 1.0m to access the fossiliferous area. Sometimes this will be pretty well covered in sand. Sometimes it will be covered in seaweed, but other times there will be hardly any of either and teeth will be easily picked up. No matter what the conditions, given a bit of looking, some teeth should be found and if you've not been to the location before, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. |
