Where to look for Fossils at Herne Bay?

(Four geological groups meet for the annual extreme low tide) - 2005

There are four main areas of different geology to search through at Herne Bay. The first is the London Clay which is exposed to the west of the bay towards 'Seasalter'

The second is an area of clay exposed on the foreshore west of the car park. This area of clay is part of the 'Oldhaven' beds. You can find fossils at low tide which the sea has washed out.

(Searching for the base of the Oldhaven Beds and Woolwich/Reading Beds) - 2005

Further east, if the tidal conditions are correct, banks of pebbles and shingle can be found, this is the base of the Oldhaven beds. Fossils from both this bed and of which from the underlying Woolwich and Reading beds are washed up. This bed is highly fossiliferious. Sadly, you need the right conditions. One of two extreme lows in a year and even with those conditions, if the wind is a strong North or North West, the sea will not go back enough. Ideal conditions are South West winds, scouring conditions and high pressure. If the bed is exposed, wet sieving is recommend

(Thanet Beds, Clays) - 2005

Further east still, a bed of shells can be seen on the foreshore, this is part of the Thanet Beds, fossils can be found here, but are very fragile.

(Thanet Beds, Sands) - 2005

Within the cliff sections to the East of the bay towards Reculver, Thanet Sand Beds contain molluscs. Shark and fish remains can also be found within this bed.
